WHAT TO EXPECT

Get the feeling of stepping into a magical forest, only 2 hours from London! The beautiful and unique hand-built studio overlooks the open countryside and is a great place to stay if you want to get out the city and enjoy some country walks. Created with a reciprocal wooden roof, it’s a perfect getaway for couples or up to 3 friends. It took them 5 years to build themselves with local volunteers! We were truly amazed at the thought and reasoning that went into the construction of the place. They also have a great sound system that really shows off the acoustics of the house!

GETTING THERE

There are great transport links from London to Beckesbourne getting you there in under 2 hours. The actual property is only a 2 minute walk from the station passing an open countryside and orchards. We’d recommend you drive if you can so it’s more convenient to visit the cute local farmers markets and nearby attractions. There is paid parking at the station where you can download the app and pay online so you don’t need to keep any printed tickets on you. Beckesbourne is one stop away (5 minutes) from the town of Canterbury so you could do a full day of discovering the city then come back to the cos Earth House!

THE ‘ROOMS’

The house is separated into 3 huts. The main room, the kitchen and the bathroom. The spacious room accommodates 4 guests and includes 1 large bed and a single bed. Here you’ll get an instant feeling of perfect imperfection, with bits of straw stocking out of the walls and they’ve even added a glass panel so you can see the straw construction! The reciprocal wooden roof is a real masterpiece and sun shining through the skylight brought out all the details of the raw materials. Overlooking a large field, the kitchen is just outside of the straw house and has all the essentials you’d expect from a self catering accommodation. It’s a bit on the small side though so you’ll have to dedicate 1 person to cook! Moving around the straw house you’ll find the toilet and shower huts. Being an eco stay, their efforts of sustainability really shined here! The toilet itself is a compost loo, which means that there’s no flush. Once you’ve done your business you scatter a small amount of sawdust and job done!
Insider tip: The WiFi can be a bit intermittent, so if you plan on streaming a film in the evening then we’d recommend it download it before you get there. Although this is the perfect place for a digital detox!

Canterbury is the next closest town, which is famous for housing one of the oldest cathedrals and UNESCO World Heritage site in England. It lies of the River Great Stour and has been inhabited since prehistoric times – that’s before the Roman invasion in AD 43! There are also many seaside towns between 20-40 minutes away where you can spend the day.
